Coffee shops and laptops

The other day a friend and me went to this nice coffeehouse near my place, we wanted to talk and this kind of places are great to do that, you know, the faint lights, the ambiental music, the coffee and a nice view. But when we got there I was pretty confused to see that like 2/3 of the people had an open latop with them. I mean, why in the name of God, would you take your laptop to a place where you supposedly go to TALK and INTERACT with someone else.

Ok let's think of the reasons to bring a laptop to a coffee shop:

1. You have a lot of work to do, but this person you really like wanted to go out, and you being the nicest person in the world go out in a date with your lover... and your work (because you are a really responsible person right?).

Brrrt wrong. It was saturday night, you most likely have nothing to do at the next day.

2. You have something (maybe video, photos or w/e get creative) in your laptop and you want to share it with the person you are going out with... because a public place is the best place to show others your shameful pictures.

Brrrt wrong. All the people with a laptop had them pointing at themselves, and sometimes there were as many laptops as persons in the table. (Fk sharing this be only mine!)

3. You are a trendy hipster (oh the irony) and you think having a laptop in a coffee shop is neat because you think it makes you look smart.

Oh we have a winner! The screens I got to spy on, had: desktop wallpaper, the browser on google, 2 lines of an in-progress-email, and other trivialities. I couldn't help but laugh out loud in the middle of the shop when I stopped to think about it.

So now you know folks, bring your laptop next time you are on a date in a coffee shop! and maybe you would look as happy as this little guy.

  4. Back when I was big into coffee shops and laptops, I surfed the net at the coffee shop cause I didn't have internet at home. I'd chill in libraries and coffee shop and do my net surfing there. These days, I can afford net acess and don't have to worry about it.

  9. Maybe something I forgot to add, solo people with laptop on coffee shop is fine (free internet and relaxing place) but the ones I was refering to are those who go like "on a date" and bring their laptops I just find it ridiculous, why are you staring at your screen if you are supposed to be flirting with someone!

  12. I take my laptop to my local coffee shop (cafemantic) all the time to just browse the web and blog. Although I agree most people just want to look like a trendy hipster. lol

  14. I work at Starbucks, and we get a lot of people coming in on their laptops. Some people just want to get out of the house and chill, even if it's just to pitter around and not ever do anything on the computer. We also have several people that will come in and do school work, or stuff for their jobs. Its a calm atmosphere for people like that. But yeah, a majority of the people are just hipster people that think coffeeshops are not mainstream.

  16. Studying at a coffeeshop is magical. My high school was down the street from one, so me and my pals (awhile back, when we didnt have licenses and were still in high school) would walk down with our laptop backpacks and stay at the coffee shop to hangout and study. more or less studying

  18. Lo mismo pasa por aquí (México DF) los cafés estan repletos de hipsters con MacBook, lo impresionante es que no encuentras mucha gente con laptops de verdad, solo trabajadores.

  19. I'm constantly amazed by this same phenomenon. Although being a student, I may be spoiled since I can still go to the library to avoid distractions. Those poor old hipsters don't have anywhere to go.

  26. I suspect that you gate crashed an “Introducing geeks into the community night”….Since geeks can’t function one to one, unless there is a keyboard involved, so they are introducing a scheme where they are taken out of their bedrooms and put in a public place, after about six month the PC’s are removed ….

This should have given the majority of them enough time to have absorbed the conversation that have been going on around them and with a little luck allow them to formulate words with their mouths rather than their fingers….

Sadly the majority of the first words are “I want my F***ing PC back”

  27. It puzzles me as well why people bring laptops to coffee shops, it's not going to make them seem more cool but I think it's usually embedded in their alter ego to show off how smart they're or how busy they're. I think they just don't realize how no one gives a fuck and actually has quite an angry and confused response to that systematic and fake behavior. Also why were you getting coffee on saturday night?
